Where They Differ

Published output, stated two ways

Coway publishes the full set for the 250S: 249 cfm for smoke, 261 for dust, 230 for pollen, with coverage stated as 465 square feet at four air changes per hour. Winix publishes a headline CADR of 253 cfm for the 5510 and an AHAM room rating of 392 square feet. Read on the same basis the two are effectively level, which is why this comparison turns on design rather than output.

Body shape and filter architecture

The Coway is a wide, shallow panel built around one bonded Max2 cartridge behind a washable pre-filter. The Winix is a 25.2 inch tower with four distinct stages: washable pre-filter, True HEPA, an AOC carbon filter aimed at deodorisation, and PlasmaWave, which can be turned off. The Winix gives the carbon stage more emphasis; the Coway gives the room back more floor.

Noise behaviour and controls

Coway rates the 250S from 22 dB, the quieter floor, though the step to its second speed is pronounced. Winix lists the 5510 from 27 dB on its lowest setting. Both offer app control and auto mode; the Coway adds a gas sensor and Rapid mode, the Winix leans on its air quality graphs in the Winix Smart app.

Questions, Answered

Does the Winix 5510's PlasmaWave have to stay on?

No. Winix provides a control for it, and the mechanical stages, pre-filter, HEPA and carbon, are the parts that carry the published CADR. Owners who prefer filtration without the PlasmaWave feature commonly run it switched off.

Which of these two is better for a bedroom that is also a living space?

The Coway, on its 22 dB published floor and its shallow body, provided the room is within its rating. The Winix counters with stronger carbon for odour heavy use. If the room is a dedicated bedroom first, also read the Airmega 150 and Core 300S entries in our bedroom guide before deciding.
