1

A wide, shallow body and the Max2 cartridge

The 250S is a broad, flat panel of a purifier: 18.5 inches wide, 19.7 tall and only 8.3 deep, in a beige grey finish with a perforated front. The front cover lifts away to reveal a washable pre-filter that slides out for rinsing, and behind it the Max2 cartridge, which bonds activated carbon and Coway's Green True HEPA layer into a single part. That bonding keeps the body slim and the change simple, at the price of replacing both media together. Coway rates the Max2 at one year, and the pre-filter's washability is what protects that schedule in a dusty or pet owning home.
2

Smart control and the speed ladder

The S in the name is the WiFi: the IoCare app brings remote control, scheduling, filter status and air quality history, and the unit adds a gas sensor to its particle sensing, a Rapid mode for a fast clear, and eco behaviour that idles the fan when the air stays clean. Coway rates noise from 22 to 54 dB(A). In practice the first speed is genuinely quiet, and owners and published figures agree the step to the second speed is where the sound arrives, so overnight use in a bedroom works best on speed one or in auto, while the higher gears are daytime tools.
3

Ownership themes

Owners praise the front loading pre-filter most, because it rinses under a tap without tools or turning the unit around, and the app scheduling is a close second for households that run it hard at set hours. Rapid mode earns mentions after cooking in open plan spaces. The complaints are equally specific: the audible jump between the first two speeds, a finish that not every owner wants on display, and confusion at reorder time, because Max2 cartridges differ by serial range and the label has to be checked before buying.

The Airmega 250S makes its case on shape and specification in equal measure.

From the verdict

In Owners' Hands

Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.

What owners praise

  • Owners like sliding the pre-filter out from the front and rinsing it under a tap without tools
  • The app schedule is praised by owners who set it to run hard before they get home from work
  • Several owners say Rapid mode visibly clears cooking haze from an open plan kitchen diner

What owners question

  • Owners mention the fan step between the first and second speed is larger than they expected
  • The beige grey finish divides opinion and limits where some owners are happy to place it
  • Reordering the correct Max2 cartridge confused owners whose serial number fell in the other range

Consider Instead

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max air purifier in grey and white with fabric pre-filter, beside a phone showing the Blueair app

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Considerably more verified CADR, 410 cfm against 249 for smoke, and a lower step between quiet and working speeds, if floor depth is not your constraint.

Winix 5510 air purifier in black with ribbed front panel and PlasmaWave control strip

Winix 5510

A similar large room rating with a four stage stack and washable pre-filter at a lower tier, if you can trade the Coway's slim body and app polish for Winix's carbon led design.

Questions, Answered

What is the difference between the Airmega 250 and the 250S?

On Coway's published specification, the filtration, CADR and coverage are the same; the 250S adds WiFi and the IoCare app, with its scheduling and remote control. If you will never open the app, the plain 250 covers the same room on the same figures.

How long does the Max2 filter last, and which one do I order?

Coway rates the Max2 cartridge at one year, with the washable pre-filter cleaned regularly to protect it. Because cartridges vary by serial range, check the label on your unit and match the part to it before ordering, which is the single most common ownership mistake with this model.
