How We Pick: The Grand Ledger Method

How The Grand Ledger chooses and judges the products in its almanac: two-signal listing verification, published specifications, owner themes, and verdicts without scores.

Every entry in The Grand Ledger is built by the same method. This page describes it in full, because a recommendation you cannot inspect is only an advertisement wearing better clothes.

Step one: the listing must verify, twice

We cover only products sold on Amazon. For each product we confirm the exact model on its live listing, and we confirm it a second way before we link: the same product, the same identifier, seen from two independent directions. If the two do not agree, the product is not entered, however famous it is. The photograph we print is the listing's own, checked file by file and viewed against the exact variant, size and colour of the model in the entry.

Step two: the specification is the argument

Products are compared on published specifications only: dimensions, weights, materials, capacities, ratings and constructions exactly as their makers print them. We do not invent specifications, and where a maker does not publish a figure, the entry says the figure is unpublished rather than guessing.

Step three: owner themes, honestly labelled

We read owner commentary to learn what living with a product is like: the zip that sticks, the cover that washes well, the foam that flattens. What we print are recurring qualitative themes. We never convert them into ratings, percentages or counts, and we never claim hands-on testing we have not done.

Step four: verdicts as trade-offs

Every review ends with who the product fits and who should skip it, and every comparison names the rival and the concrete difference. There are no star scores in The Grand Ledger. A product that is wrong for one reader is the right answer for another, and a single number hides exactly the information that decides it.

Corrections and updates

Models change and listings move. Pages carry the date they were last checked, and we re-verify listings as part of our revision cycle. If you spot a detail that no longer matches the product as sold, write to us through the contact page and we will re-check it.
