How to Choose an Air Purifier in 2027The Buying Guide
1
Start with CADR and work out your room
CADR, the Clean Air Delivery Rate, is the one figure in this category that is measured on a common basis, most often under the AHAM Verifide program. It states how much filtered air a machine delivers for smoke, dust and pollen, in cubic feet per minute. The working rule is simple: for the AHAM recommended rate of about 4.8 air changes per hour, look for a smoke CADR of at least two thirds of your room's square footage. A 240 square foot bedroom therefore wants a CADR near 160, a 390 square foot living room one near 250, and a 600 square foot open plan space one near 400. Every product in our guide publishes its CADR, and the makers' rated room sizes in our tables are built from the same arithmetic.
2
Read coverage claims with their air change rate attached
Coverage is where marketing does its quiet work. A figure quoted at one air change per hour can be four to five times larger than the same machine's rating at the recommended rate, and both numbers will appear in the same listing, the big one in the title. Neither is false, but they describe different service: one change per hour is a gentle freshening, while the recommended rate is the level the category's guidance is built around. When you compare two machines, compare like with like: rated room against rated room, CADR against CADR. Our spec tables print both figures for each model, labelled with the basis the maker used.
3
Choose the filter stack for your actual air
A purifier's stack has up to three working layers, and each answers a different problem. The pre-filter catches hair, lint and coarse dust, and in a pet home it decides how long the expensive layers last, which is why washable pre-filters recur throughout our picks. The particle layer, HEPA, H13 HEPA or Blueair's HEPASilent, captures the fine material at its published filter class. The activated carbon layer addresses gases and odours, and its size and quality vary more than any other part of the stack: households buying for cooking or litter smells should weigh the carbon stage first, including the Winix designs that let you wash or generously size it. Note whether the layers are separate or bonded into one cartridge, because bonding means replacing all of them when one is spent.
4
Take noise seriously, at the low end
A purifier only cleans while it runs, and it will run for hours beside people who are sleeping, working or watching television. Makers quote noise as a range, and the figure that decides comfort is the bottom of it. Machines in our guide start at 18 to 23 dB on their lowest settings, which is quiet enough for a bedroom, and one starts at 46 dB, which is not, whatever its other virtues. Also check what the low speed delivers: a silent machine at a trickle of CADR is less useful than a slightly louder one that still turns the room's air over. Auto mode and a good sensor bridge the two, running quietly by default and climbing only when the air asks.
5
Plan the ownership, not just the purchase
Before you choose, price the next three years in filters, at least in effort if not in figures. How often does the main filter come due: roughly annually for most machines here, about 3,000 hours for the Medify MA-40, on a colour indicator or an app counter for others. Is the pre-filter washable, and how fiddly is the change: front loading, base loading or a full sleeve swap. Does the model need an app account, and does your WiFi run on the band it expects. Finally, match the warranty to the tier, from the Coway Airmega 150's three years down. A purifier is a subscription to its own filters, and the machine you will maintain is the machine that will keep its published performance.

The Shortlist This Guide Points To
The leading names from the ranked guide, where this thinking lands.
The large room flagship of the Blue Pure Max line, with the highest AHAM CADR in this guide.
It holds the strongest verified hand in this guide: an AHAM CADR of 410 cfm, coverage of 635 square feet at the recommended rate, and a noise floor of 23 dB that keeps that power usable overnight. The fabric pre-filter is washable, the app reports particle levels by size, and nothing else here cleans a large room this fast this quietly on published figures.

A washable pre-filter, a dedicated pet mode and AHAM figures that suit most living rooms.
The Vital 200S covers the room most people actually own, with AHAM figures of 250 cfm for smoke and a 388 square foot rating, then adds the ownership details that matter in a pet household: a washable pre-filter, a pet mode and an air quality monitor. It asks for app control in return, but the spec sheet underneath is the most balanced here.
Suits
Family living rooms and pet households that want strong verified CADR with a pre-filter they can wash

Questions, Answered
Do I need a purifier with a sensor and auto mode?
+
It is the feature most owners end up valuing, because it lets the machine run quietly by default and respond on its own when cooking, cleaning or a pet stirs the air. Every smart model in our guide includes one. If you prefer simplicity, the Blue Pure 411 Auto shows the other philosophy: one button, an auto mode, and nothing else to manage.
Is HEPASilent the same as HEPA?
+
Not exactly. HEPASilent is Blueair's published approach of combining mechanical filtration with electrostatic particle charging, and Blueair credits it for reaching its CADR figures at lower noise. For comparison purposes the CADR and coverage figures are measured on the same basis as the HEPA models, so compare those rather than the filter names.
One large unit or two smaller ones for a flat?
+
Size each purifier to the room it will stand in, because air does not travel well through doorways. A common pattern is a quiet, correctly sized unit in the bedroom, where it runs all night, and a higher CADR unit in the main living space. Our bedroom and large room micro guides are built around exactly that split.
