Where They Differ

Fabric against shell

The Maxlite body is polyester, which gives in a tight bin, offers two front pockets and absorbs scuffs and moisture. The Freeform body is polypropylene, which sheds rain, protects contents and wipes clean, but removes outside pockets and opens like a book on the floor. The choice is organisation against protection, in that order.

Weight and security

At 5.4 lb the Maxlite leaves more of a cabin weight allowance for contents, while the Freeform at 6.5 lb spends some of that margin on its shell and on a recessed TSA combination lock. The Maxlite has no built in lock, so its security depends on a separate cable lock through the zip pulls.

Interior layout

The Maxlite keeps a deep main compartment behind a lid pocket, suiting cubes and rolled clothing. The Freeform splits packing across two shell halves with cross ribbons and a divider, suiting folded shirts and a flatter lay. Packing style, more than brand, should settle this point.

Questions, Answered

Which of the two handles airport rain better?

The Freeform. Its polypropylene shell sheds water, while the Maxlite polyester can absorb moisture in heavy rain on an exposed jet bridge. A rain cover or a checked bag liner solves it for the Maxlite on wet routes.
