Luggage Care and Keeping 2027

Luggage care for 2027: shell scuffs and cracks, zipper care, wheel and handle fixes, and storage and odour problems solved step by step.

Most luggage does not wear out in the hold. It wears out in storage, under a stuck zip, or on a wheel that picked up grit months ago and was never cleaned. This guide covers the six problems owners meet most often, with fixes that respect shell materials and fabrics alike. Work on an empty case, on a clean floor, and keep small screws and parts in a dish as you go.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. Scuffs and black marks on a hard shell

Wipe the shell with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then work stubborn conveyor marks with a melamine cleaning sponge using light pressure. Test any sponge on the base of the case first, because gloss finishes can dull. Avoid solvents on polycarbonate and polypropylene, and dry the shell fully before closing it for storage.

02. A cracked or dented shell corner

Small dents in polypropylene and polycarbonate sometimes relax back with gentle warmth from a hairdryer on its lowest setting, applied from a distance and never held in one place. A true crack is structural: stop using the case for checked trips, check the maker warranty position, and use luggage repair tape only as a short term cabin measure. A cracked corner will spread under baggage handling loads.

03. A stiff, gritty or separating zip

Brush the zip teeth with an old toothbrush to clear grit, then run a graphite pencil or a small amount of zip lubricant along the teeth and work the slider slowly. If a coil zip separates behind the slider, the slider is usually worn rather than the teeth: pinch is not a fix, so have the slider replaced by a repairer. Keep fabric edges and packing straps out of the zip path, which is the commonest cause of jams.

04. A wobbling, noisy or stuck spinner wheel

Turn the case over and pick hair and thread from around the wheel axle, then wash grit out with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. A drop of silicone lubricant on the swivel bearing restores most quiet rolls. If a wheel is cracked or a housing is loose, note the case model and ask the maker about a replacement wheel unit before a trip, because a failed wheel at a terminal is far harder to solve than one on a workbench.

05. A telescopic handle that sticks or will not lock

Extend the handle fully and wipe the tubes clean, since dried grit on the tubes is the usual cause of sticking. Check the release button travel and look for a dented tube section, which no lubricant will cure. Work a trace of silicone spray into the joints and cycle the handle slowly. If one side locks and the other does not, stop forcing it and contact the maker, because the internal linkage needs service rather than pressure.

06. Musty smells and storage damage

Empty the case completely, vacuum the lining, and wipe interior surfaces with a cloth dampened with a mild soap solution, then air the open case in moving air until fully dry. A bowl of bicarbonate of soda left inside overnight absorbs lingering odour before you vacuum again. Store cases open or loosely closed, out of direct heat, with hard shells unnested from pressure points and fabric cases somewhere dry, because a sealed damp case is where odours and mildew begin.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 carry-on spinner suitcase in black, front view

Best Overall

The lightest full size cabin spinner in this catalog, with a proper front pocket layout.

The Maxlite 5 spinner pairs the lowest empty weight of any full size cabin case here, 5.4 lb, with a 46 L capacity and proper front pockets. For most travellers that balance of weight, space and organisation is the safest single purchase in the catalog.

Best Hardside Carry-On

A ridged polypropylene cabin case with a recessed TSA lock and double spinner wheels.

Its polypropylene shell, recessed TSA lock and double spinner wheels give hard case protection at 6.5 lb. The ridged panels shrug off the scuffs that show badly on smooth shells, which suits travellers who sometimes check a cabin case on the return leg.

Questions, Answered

How often should I clean luggage wheels and zips?

After any checked trip, and every few cabin trips. A two minute wheel clean and zip brush at home prevents the grit build up that turns into wobble, noise and slider wear on the next journey.

Can I wash a softside suitcase?

Spot clean only. Use a mild soap solution on a cloth, work a small area at a time, and air dry fully with the case open. Saturating a fabric case risks the frame, the lining adhesives and later odour problems in storage.
