Winter Coat Care and Keeping 2027

Keeping down lofty, shells proofed and hardware working: washing, reproofing, storage and the small zipper and snap repairs that extend a coat's life.

Most winter coats do not wear out; they are slowly flattened, stripped of their water finish, or retired by one failed zipper. The care below follows the logic of the fabrics in this topic: down that must stay lofty to stay warm, shells whose proofing is a renewable finish rather than a permanent property, and hardware that usually needs cleaning or alignment before it needs replacing. Always let the maker's own care label overrule any general advice, including ours.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. Down coat feels flat and cold after washing

Loft is the insulation, and wet down clumps. Wash on a gentle cycle with a down specific or mild detergent, rinse twice to clear residue, then tumble dry low with clean dryer balls, stopping to break up clumps by hand as it dries. The coat is done only when it feels completely dry and springy; a damp core will smell and underperform. If loft does not return, a second full drying cycle usually finishes what the first started.

02. Shell that used to shed snow now soaks through

The durable water repellent finish wears and gets masked by dirt. First wash the shell as the label allows, since a clean finish often revives on its own, and warm tumble drying can reactivate it. If water still spreads instead of beading, apply a reproofing product made for insulated garments, spray on for down filled shells so the fill is not saturated, and dry as directed to set it.

03. Coat stored since spring smells stale and looks lifeless

Never store down compressed or in a sealed plastic bag. Hang the coat, or use a large breathable cotton storage bag, in a dry place, and give it a day of airing plus a short low tumble with dryer balls before the season starts. Compression stuff sacks are for the trip, not for the wardrobe, and they are the main reason packable jackets lose their warmth over the years.

04. Front zipper splits open from the bottom or sticks

Work through the cheap causes first. Wash grit out of the teeth, check the slider for a trapped thread, and run a graphite pencil or a little zip lubricant along the teeth. A slider that has loosened with age can often be pinched very gently back into shape with pliers; a slider that is cracked, or teeth that are missing, is a tailor job, and on a good parka it is a job worth paying for rather than retiring the coat.

05. A snap or button has pulled through the fabric

Stop using that closure before the hole grows. A tailor can back the area with a small patch of matching fabric inside the facing and reset the snap or resew the button through the reinforced layers, which is stronger than the original fixing. For storm flap snaps that take daily strain, ask for the reinforcement on the neighbouring snaps at the same visit.

06. Faux fur ruff looks crushed after storage

Shake the ruff out, hang the hood in a steamy bathroom rather than steaming it directly, and brush the fibres gently in one direction with a soft brush as it dries. Keep it away from radiators and hair dryers on hot settings, which frizz synthetic fur permanently. Storing the hood unhooded from the coat, or with the ruff unzipped and flat where the design allows, prevents the crush from returning.

The North Face Women's Arctic Parka in TNF Black, long front view with faux fur trimmed hood

Best Overall

A waterproof, 600 fill down parka with coverage to the knee and sizes that run into plus.

It is the only coat here that pairs a waterproof shell with 600 fill down and a 35.25 inch hem, so it answers wind, wet snow and standing cold at once. The published standard and plus size range means the recommendation holds for more bodies than most parkas on this page.

Suits

Daily deep winter commuting where snow, wind and standing around are all part of the route.

Best for Wet Winter Streets

A full length waterproof coat with 700 fill down inside and a clean, city ready line.

The Chelsea puts 700 fill down inside a waterproof, full length shell and keeps the face fabric smooth enough for work. Where the Arctic is expedition gear, the Chelsea is the same weather logic cut for the city, with a zip off hood to change the look.

Suits

Wet snow cities where the coat has to look composed at the office door and still shed weather on the walk there.

Best Statement Coat

The oversized, fleece hooded down coat with six pockets and a silhouette built around volume.

A 90% RDS down filler, a fleece lined hood and six real pockets inside an oversized silhouette that owners treat as the outfit itself. It makes no waterproof claim, so its crown is for dry, bitter days when volume and warmth matter most.

Wearers who run cold and want the coat itself, with its deep pockets and fleece lined hood, to be the outfit.

Questions, Answered

How often should a winter coat be washed?

When it is dirty, and at least once before storage, since body oils migrate into down and flatten it over a summer. Spot clean cuffs and collars between washes, and treat frequent washing of a coated shell as a cost to its finish that reproofing can repay.

Can synthetic coats like the Heavenly be cared for the same way?

Mostly, and more forgivingly: synthetic fill tolerates washing and dries faster, and it does not clump the same way. It still dislikes high heat and long compression, and its shell finish needs the same reproofing attention as any other.
