Mattress Care and Keeping 2027

How to keep a mattress at its best in 2027: rotation schedules, spill response, sagging and edge checks, and the protector and foundation problems that shorten a bed's life.

Most mattress problems are housekeeping problems that arrived quietly: a bed that was never rotated, a spill that soaked the foam before anyone blotted it, a protector that turned the surface into a drum, or a foundation quietly bending the support core out of shape. This guide works through the checks and fixes that apply across the foam, hybrid and grid beds in this topic. None of it requires tools beyond a tape measure, a straight edge and an honest look at the base.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. The bed feels different on one side than the other

Rotate the mattress 180 degrees so the head becomes the foot. For the first year, rotate every 3 months; after that, every 6 months is a sensible rhythm for foam and hybrid beds alike. Most modern one sided mattresses should not be flipped, since the comfort layers sit on top by design. Mark the calendar when you rotate, because wear evens out so gradually that memory alone will not keep the schedule.

02. A spill or accident has soaked into the surface

Strip the bedding at once and blot, never rub, with clean towels until no more moisture lifts. A small amount of mild detergent solution can be dabbed on a stain, then blotted with a barely damp cloth. Let the spot dry completely, ideally with moving air, before remaking the bed: sealing damp foam under sheets invites odour. Never soak memory foam and never use heat to speed drying, since both damage the cell structure. A waterproof protector, fitted before the next accident, is the permanent fix.

03. A dip or sag seems to be forming where you sleep

First rule out the base: remove the mattress, lay a straight edge across the sleeping area and measure any gap beneath it, then check the foundation or slats the same way, since a flexing base prints its shape into the bed above it. If the dip follows the mattress onto a flat floor, note its depth against the maker's warranty terms, photograph it with the straight edge in frame, and start the claim with those measurements rather than with a description.

04. The edges have gone soft and sitting feels like sliding

Foam edged beds soften first where people sit to dress, which is normal wear rather than sudden failure. Reduce the habit by sitting in varied spots, rotate the mattress so the worked edge changes ends, and check that the frame is not narrower than the mattress, which leaves the border unsupported. If edge softness is new and dramatic, run the sag check above, since a failing support core often announces itself at the perimeter first.

05. The protector has changed how the bed feels

A protector stretched drum tight can mute a contouring foam, stop a Purple grid from flexing and make a quilted top feel board like. Refit it with a little slack, following the skirt rather than pulling the top panel taut, and choose a protector whose top fabric has some give. If the bed feels right without the protector and wrong with it, the protector, not the mattress, is the problem to replace.

06. The foundation creaks, flexes or has wide slat gaps

Foam and hybrid mattresses need a firm, flat base: slats spaced closely and evenly, a solid platform, or a foundation the maker approves. Wide gaps let foam press between slats and can void warranty terms, while a tired box spring under a modern hybrid adds bounce the bed was not tuned for. Add a bunkie board or replace failing slats, centre supports included, before blaming the mattress for a lumpy ride.

Questions, Answered

Can I flip a modern foam or hybrid mattress?

Generally no. The beds in this guide are one sided, with comfort layers engineered to sit on top of a support core, so flipping would put you on the base foam. Rotation head to foot gives you the wear levelling benefit that flipping used to provide.

How soon after unboxing should a boxed mattress be opened?

Open it promptly on arrival and allow the full expansion window the maker states, commonly 24 to 72 hours, in a warm room where foam expands more readily. Sleeping on it during expansion is permitted by most makers, but judge firmness only after it has reached full height.
