Dog Bed Care and Keeping for 2027

Care guidance for dog beds in 2027: washing covers without shrinking, reviving flattened foam, controlling odour, and fixing liner and zipper problems before they spread.

Most dog beds do not wear out, they get dirty, flat or smelly one small neglect at a time. The fixes below follow the construction of the beds in this topic: covers that zip off over liners, foam that must stay dry, fiberfill that washes whole, and one mesh cot. Work through them in order after any accident, and the bed you bought is the bed you keep.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. The cover shrank or will not refit after washing

Wash covers cool and dry them low or on a line, because hot cycles are what pull a fitted cover in at the corners. If a cover already feels tight, refit it while it is very slightly damp and work the foam corners into the cover corners one at a time, smoothing the liner flat underneath first. A snug premium cover may need two people, which owners of the Big Barker report as normal rather than a defect.

02. The foam has flattened where the dog always sleeps

First, air the bare foam for a day out of its cover, away from direct heat, and let it recover unloaded. Rotate the bed end for end weekly so the same shoulder is not always on the same foam. Egg crate peaks recover least and solid slabs most, and a foam that stays pressed to the floor under the dog has reached the end of its useful life for that dog, whatever the calendar says.

03. Odour that survives a cover wash

The smell usually lives below the cover, in the liner or the top of the foam. Strip the bed fully, wash the cover, wipe the liner down and let it dry completely, then air the foam itself in moving air for several hours. A sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda on the foam surface, left for an hour and vacuumed off, helps between deep cleans. Never seal a bed back up damp, because trapped moisture is what turns a faint smell permanent.

04. Liquid got past the cover and reached the foam

Act the same day. Remove the cover and liner, blot the foam rather than soaking it, and stand it on edge in airflow until it is dry through, which can take a full day for a thick slab. Check where the protection stopped: several models in this topic waterproof the base or the top layer but not the bolster sides, so an edge spill is a known gap, not bad luck. Once dry, consider a washable waterproof layer over the sleeping surface.

05. A zipper snags, separates or will not close

Most zipper trouble is trapped liner or fabric in the teeth. Back the slider off slowly, free the caught material with a fingertip rather than force, and run the slider along the full track once with the cover empty to check it. Keep zippers clear of foam edges when refitting, wash covers with the zip closed so the track keeps its shape, and treat a metal zip as the repairable component it is: a local tailor can replace a slider far more cheaply than a cover.

06. Bolster fill has migrated or the nest feels lopsided

Unzip what can be unzipped and shake the fill back toward the thin spots, kneading fiberfill bolsters through the fabric to break up clumps, especially after a whole bed wash like the Majestic Pet Bagel or the MidWest pad. Dry fiberfill completely and shake it out while still warm from a low dryer cycle, because damp fill clumps set as they cool. A bolster that will not hold shape after redistributing has simply lost its loft.

PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed in slate grey with a golden retriever resting on the bolster

Best Overall

A solid memory foam slab, a waterproof liner and proper zippers, in a tidy sofa shape.

The most complete specification in the set: a solid memory foam base, a waterproof liner over that foam, a cotton blend cover on YKK zippers and a bolster that suits leaners. It does nothing the deepest or the longest, yet it has no weak line in its listing, which is why it leads.

Suits

Owners who want one well specified foam bed with a liner, for a medium to large dog who leans on a bolster.

Skip if

Your dog is a determined chewer, or you need a bed that goes in the wash whole rather than a cover that comes off.

Sizes
Large 36 x 28 inches in Slate Grey, with Medium, X-Large and Jumbo sizes in the same line
Fill
Solid memory foam base with a polyfilled bolster cushion
Cover
Removable cotton and polyester blend cover over a waterproof liner, with YKK zippers
Thickness
9 inches overall in Large including the bolster, over a solid foam base listed at 4 inches in the Ultimate line

Best for Large and Giant Dogs

Seven inches of layered foam in sizes built only for large and giant dogs.

Seven inches of layered foam in sizes written by weight band, up to a Giant, is a specification no other bed here approaches. For a dog heavy enough to press a 4 inch bed flat, this depth is the whole argument, and the washable cover keeps it practical.

Suits

Heavy dogs in the largest weight bands who press thinner foam flat, and owners who want foam depth above all else.

Skip if

Your dog is small or medium, since the line starts at Large, or you need bolsters on more than one side.

Sizes
X-Large 52 x 36 inches in Khaki, listed for 75 to 120 lb, with Large and Giant sizes in the Headrest line
Fill
Three layer foam stack, comfort foam above and below a firmer support foam core

Best Value Foam Sofa

Egg crate foam in a four sided sofa, with a waterproof liner and a flannel cover that zips off.

Egg crate foam, a four sided bolster with a lowered front, a waterproof liner and certified foam, at a value tier. The X-Large gives a 34 x 27.5 inch sleeping area inside the bolsters, which is honest room for a large dog who curls.

Suits

Value leaning buyers who still want a real foam base, a full bolster surround and a liner, in a large size.

Skip if

Your dog is very heavy and needs a solid slab, since egg crate foam gives more under concentrated weight.

Sizes
X-Large 42 x 32 inches in Grey, with a listed sleeping area of 34 x 27.5 inches in the maker size chart
Fill
High density egg crate foam base with deeply filled bolster cushions

Questions, Answered

Can I wash the foam if it smells very bad?

The foam beds in this topic say no, in print: covers wash and foam stays dry. Spot clean the surface, air it thoroughly and use bicarbonate of soda as described. If odour has soaked deep into a slab, replacement of the bed is the honest outcome, and a liner on the next bed is the prevention.

How do I keep a cot bed fresh?

The mesh cot is the easy case in this topic: remove the bolsters for washing, hose or wipe the mesh and frame, and let everything dry in the air before reassembly. Check frame corners and bolster attachments monthly, because a cot that flexes at a loose corner sags at the centre next.
